Is Sexual Harassment Against The Law?
Sexual harassment is not against the law, but it is a violation of the Human Rights Code. This code protects persons against discrimination and harassment based on characteristics such as race, skin-colour, sex, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, and disability.
If you contact the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission, they can offer information and assistance to deal with sexual harassment. A sexually harassed person can file a complaint with the Commission. The harasser, and if relevant the employer, will be contacted. A Human Rights Officer will investigate the complaint and, if the evidence supports the complaint, will attempt to negotiate a voluntary settlement. This service is free of charge.
